Landmark $100-million Gift to the University of Toronto

Thanks to an historic gift to the University of Toronto from Gerald Schwartz and Heather Reisman, the soon-to-be built Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre will accelerate innovation in Toronto and Canada by creating the country’s largest university-based innovation node. The $100-million investment is the largest donation in U of T’s history and the largest gift ever to the Canadian innovation sector.

The gift will help construct a 750,000-square-foot complex designed to anchor U of T’s unique cluster of world-leading artificial intelligence scientists and biomedical experts, its world-class entrepreneurship network, and the country’s largest concentration of student- and faculty-led startups.

There's A Reason North America's Tech Talent Is Heading To Toronto

Toronto recently made waves on the web with the news that the Ontario capital had become North America's fastest-growing tech market. According to the CBRE's 2017 North American Scoring Tech Talent report, Toronto added 22,500 new technology jobs to eclipse tech hotbeds New York (5,370) and San Francisco (11,540) combined. Shopify Will Invest Up To $500-Million In New Toronto Office

Fast growing e-commerce platform Shopify Inc. says it will invest as much as half-a-billion dollars into its forthcoming Toronto office, in a large downtown development where it plans to house thousands of new employees.

The Ottawa-based company’s neon-green shopping-bag beacon is expected to top the 38-storey skyscraper at the corner of Front Street West and Spadina Avenue when The Well complex, jointly owned by Allied Properties REIT and RioCan REIT, opens in 2022. Shopify’s investment and its anchor-tenant logo rights are part of a 15-year deal that Michael Scace, who brokered the transaction, said is one of the biggest-ever completed in the King West market on the edge of Toronto’s downtown core.

Toronto's Biggest Tech Hub to Expand to Menkes Waterfront Centre

Canada’s biggest science and technology incubator is expanding to Toronto’s eastern waterfront as it joins a host of other companies jostling for extra space in the city to grow.

MaRS Discovery District, which houses some of the country’s biggest AI hubs and more than 50 startups, is in the final stages of securing a lease with Menkes Developments Ltd. for 24,000 square feet (2,230 square meters) at a new development by the Lake Ontario waterfront, according to a statement Tuesday.
